Quest 2: The Lost Boy

How to Start the Quest

Assuming you arrive to town during the daytime, you will come across a woman talking with two other men. If you double click on one of them to enter the conversation, you will find out the woman’s son is missing. You can volunteer after the background dialog is over. They also offer some additional information about where the dragonhead mines are.

Note: If you arrived at night time then, youll need to wait till the next morning or speak with the innkeeper to get a room till morning. Once leaving the direct tavern area and coming back you should see the woman talking with the two other men.

Quest Background

You can speak with some of the other townsfolk about the missing child; which will give you ideas of where to look in the mines or give you their opinions about whether they think he ventured in or not. Its not required to do this but there is some other useful information that may come up about the mines.

Additionally, If you want to follow along with the story I recommend speaking with the tavern keeper, he will offer fairly in depth back story to the world and current events around the area.

Before You Leave Town

While the quest isn’t especially difficult you will likely run into at least a few ratmen in the mines. Now is a good time to stop by and pick up some potions, bandages and/or armor from the blacksmith and provisioner.

The Mines

Once you’re ready, the mine entrance are in farthest point into the mountain valley in dragon head village. The first level of the mines isn’t too difficult of an area but if you do wander into the wrong areas where either the cave recluse lair or where there is a cave troll, you may find yourself in trouble. So if you see either of those monsters, you might want to think twice about facing them as a very low level character. There are numerous barrels and crates that may have various resources for you to gather. You can do this during the quest or at a later time.

Rescuing the Boy

If you do not feel like hunting down the boy by exploring the mines. I will make it easy for you; he will be in one of the three locations on the map below.

After you find him, all you need to do is speak with him and go through the short dialog, then return to town with him. He will follow you out of the mines. Sometimes he gets behind if you are full speed out of there. Give him a chance to stay at least within half a screen length.

Once out of the mines with the boy, take him to his mother’s home that is two houses above the inn. Once you are close, the boy will run to his mother yelling that he is home, his mother should come out and a short dialog will start. She will offer you a few silver coins for helping her. You may decide to take her money or not. The decision will have an impact far later in the story.

Tips
  • If you find the mines too dark, even with a torch equipped, you can adjust the map brightness in the game options under Map Settings (Press ESC to access Options)
  • Use this quest as a chance to get used to the controls, gameplay, and combat. Also the mines require the use of the transparency feature to have the best experience navigating them. You can use “T” to toggle transparency on or off that lets you see behind the tall mountain passages.
  • You wont be able to get through the metal door going down to the second level right now, so do not waste your time. The mining guild master, Naven has locked it off. This will come into play a few quests down the line.
